Cancer Care
Discovering cancer at the earliest stages offers the best opportunity for successful treatment, and Lower Keys Medical Center is committed to promoting early detection through screenings and diagnostic services.
Screening and diagnostic services include:
-
Advanced imaging technology - Computerized tomography (CT or CAT scan) including low-dose CT screening for lung cancer, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound, positron emission tomography (PET), nuclear medicine screening, and x-rays provide a detailed picture of internal organs and tissues to help detect cancer.
-
Breast cancer detection - The Women’s Imaging Center at Lower Keys Medical Center offers 3D mammography for early detection of breast cancer. 3D mammography takes multiple images of the breast and combines the angles to form a 3D image allowing doctors to view different portions of the breast with more detail than traditional technology.
-
Diagnostic and screening procedures allow for early detection of certain cancers or serious conditions, such as colorectal and GI cancers. Procedures include colonoscopy, esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), and sigmoidoscopy.
-
Surgical procedures to secure tissue or cell samples for testing and diagnosis of potential cancer include frozen section biopsy, also known as cryosection, and sentinel node biopsy.
Cancer is not generic. Each patient, each diagnosis and each treatment is unique. The team at Lower Keys Medical Center is committed to providing advanced technologies for a patient's treatment plan.
Services for patients with a cancer diagnosis include:
-
Radio frequency identification (RFID) tagging for breast cancer surgery is used to closely pinpoint the location of tumors. This helps surgeons more effectively remove the tumor and spare healthy breast tissue.
-
Biopsies using x-ray, CT, ultrasound, and stereotactic mammography identify the location of cancer cells.
-
Sentinel node mapping is used to determine whether cancer is present or if cancer has spread to other lymph nodes or organs.
-
Surgical services that may be part of a cancer treatment plan include colectomy (colon surgery); nephrectomy (kidney surgery); prostatectomy (prostate surgery); thyroidectomy (thyroid surgery); hysterectomy/Salpingo-Oophorectomy (uterus, cervix, fallopian tube, and/or ovary surgery); mastectomy/lumpectomy (breast surgery); removal of melanoma (skin surgery); and lymph node dissection.
-
Iron infusion services can help treat cancer patients with anemia.
